Long Term Weight Management. 02/07/2010

Exercise can be fun, a nature walk, is my favorite.
The 7 secrets of long term weight management
  • Keep a diary, tracking what you eat and drink and how much exercise you do is the key to understanding your 'energy equation'.
I tend to keep a running tally of calories, 'in my head', if I am successful managing my weight. If I find I am slipping, I quickly revert to writing everything down to make sure I am not underestimating or not counting anything.
  • Eat breakfast A good breakfast kick-starts your metabolism and helps curb your mid-morning hunger pangs, making it the most important meal of the day. Many trainers recommend that breakfast should be 400 to 600 calories. I eat, muesli, skim milk, low fat unsweetened yogurt, fruit and a few almonds on top. It is delicious ad the serve size I have is 400 calories and that and my  skim milk coffee and fruit mid morning snack is 600 calories consumed in the morning.

  • Be active daily Exercising for up to an hour a day is the ultimate way to manage your weight and feel revitalized.

  • Weigh and measure Weighing in once a week and taking your body measurements monthly will provide you with motivational evidence of your weight loss.  I focus on the monthly weight, not the weekly fluctuations.

  • Limit takeaway Takeaway and fast food can still be enjoyed as part of your weight-loss program, but in a controlled, healthy way. I use very little pre packaged, pre made food, they are hidden sources of corn syrup and hydrogenated fats which I try to avoid.

  • Be consistent Being good in the week and bad at weekends is a common eating strategy, however research shows that consistency is key.

  • Jump on rebounds Regains are a normal part of weight management, but the secret is to jump on them immediately and go back to basics.

Vitamin D Levels, linked to weight loss. 02/07/2010

It is imposible to overdose on Vitamin D from sunshine. Sadly with all our protecting our skin from the sun's harmful rays many of us are now Vitamin D deficient. Many obese people do not manurfacture enough Vitamin D through the skin and need suplimentation.
A recent study of the Vitamin D levels of obese men and women over a 11 week period prior to beginning a calorie restricted diet, and during and after this diet showed a strong relationship to healthy high levels of Vit D and successful dieting.

For every  increment increase in the Vitamin D level in the dieting study participant, it was found they lost half a pound more weight.

Having higher levels of Vitamin D at the start of the diet also resulted in greater loss of abdominal fat. This abdominal fat being the most dangerous due to it's link to diabetes and heart disease.

Another potential piece to the weight loss puzzle was unveiled recently when researchers discovered there may be a link between vitamin D levels and shedding pounds.

Dr. Shalamar Sibley, an assistant professor of medicine at the university of Minnesota cautioned that more controlled clinical trials are needed to see if Vit D supplements will have any benefit in helping people loose weight during diets.

Excess levels of Vitamin D are toxic and any Vitamin D level taken as a supplement is best taken only after a blood test to make sure it is required.  Vitamin D3 is the safest supplement to take and most people absorb adequate Vitamin D through an average of 15 minutes a day (variable by time of year and time of day) from the sun with highly pigmented people needing up to 10 times more sun exposure to absorb the same amount of Vitamin D as a fair skinned person.  It is impossible to overdose on Vitamin D from  sunshine.

I have just had my Vitamin D levels checked lin May 2019,  they were very low and I needed  to supplement under doctors and dietitian advice. In September 2009, they were at the low side of normal, I will re check them again soon and hope to be in the medium to high side of the normal range. I still take Vittamin D3 on dieticians recomendation.

Remember that excess Vitamin D is toxic and do not self medicate.

Cardio, Balance and Stretching Fitness Improvements. 02/03/2010

But a confession, still no improvement in my workaholic behaviour and skimping on sleep. Yes I will make an effort to impove and drop a few more bad habits.  ~~~ Tomorrow.
What day is tomorrow?
Please do not tell me it is Wednesday.

Well actually, it is past midnight so it is Thursday morning.  My action plans for this week have taken a bit of a slide. My active afternoons have been, tied up with a lot of sedentary activity, organizing appointment, public relations as I plan our tour.

I am very grateful I have the wii, as the little time I have had to be active this week has at least been spent in very active exercise, jogging, full body work outs and yoga, using my Wii Fit Plus , the Wii, Biggest Loser program and its weight loss yoga.  Therefore, less exercise but at least I have exercised at full efficiency.

Two fitness benefits have shown themselves in the short time I have been using the Wii.  The first one was that finally I could do a hamstring stretch. That has been a stretch, that I have been trying to do for three years, I set is as a goal to be able to do that movement, less than two weeks ago, never thinking for a moment that within 10 days of doing striving to do it while using the Wii, each night, I would have it mastered. J

The second fitness benefit is in my resting heartbeat, which was usually close to 40 and at times, my pulse would be so thready and weak, I could not, read it and most equipment will give an error message. Not a healthy reading, I figured I would need a pace maker and new valves one of these days but hoped it would be a long way off, and finally I have pushed that probability into the unlikely.

The slow pulse was one of the reasons why I rarely exercise in the mornings but sit quietly writing for hours, have breakfast and a couple of coffees until my pulse is up enough that I won’t feel a low pulse effects as I move around.

Three years ago when I was morbidly obese, that slow pulse, would have me feeling feint several times a day and be sending me off to hospital a couple of times a week.  A year later, after I had lost a lot of weight, I was a lot healthier, my lungs clearer but the pulse was still too slow.

I have checked my pulse on and off today, from the moment I woke up until now, as I rest and write. My pulse has maintained a steady resting pulse rate of between 58 and 65 and that is a HUGE and healthy improvement. J. Finally, I am seeing results in that one last area of my health I had hoped to see stabilise back to great health. J. I am thrilledJ.

Workaholism! 02/02/2010
0 Comments

Some people undermine their action plans to goal by eating their emotions and I failed to complete my own action plans to goal yesterday but sliding back into a full day and evening of sheer sedentary work, workaholism. My sin is work obsession, and not remembering to maintain a balance in my life.  This is not a problem for one day, as long as I observe what I am doing, and make plans to, not repeat, that obsessive behaviour repeatedly.

Tina from Mummified, times, Five, blog, and I were setting up this giveaway of 10 lots of $100. value art supplies through our combined blog sites and this work had  a deadline to begin on February one and we only began  24 hours earlier. For details of the competition check here:- $1,000. Art Supply Giveaway.

I needed to dig out all the art supplies I had to spare, run them through the barcode scanner and get their valuation, and get this competition up and running.  Then before I had hardly begun, I had lots more enquiries and as a result, I have been out delivering purchased art supplies to a shop today, a shop that had not done well over the Christmas period. The store owner was art supplies desire eager and cash short.  She was, overstocked in soft furnishings; I made an unusual trade of artists paint boxes of oil paint and a pastel box for soft furnishings for my caravan. Talk about a luxurious looking touring studio homeJ.

It has been a busy couple of productive days and I never fitted in any planned exercise and while I have certainly allowed for rest days in my exercise regime I never intended the first day of the month, the first day of a several fitness challenges I am going to do with friends, would be a rest day.

It worked out OK, though. I have been working hard on my hip extension, plank move, in Yoga.  I do not find this  exercise an easy one and I could really ‘feel’ the muscle pull yesterday, a day’s activity change and the muscles have rested, I just need to ensure I am back, building on my previous effort, tonight, no more rest days, due for a week if I want to achieve my fitness improvement goals.

One thing I always notice, when I cut back on physical activity, my desire to eat increases.  I did not overeat, but it was more of an effort that usually not to head out to the kitchen to snack on food.  A better solution for me is to go for a walk and short jogs, or to do a full, bodywork out, or a session of yoga. This action, takes away my focus on food, I feel great that I know I am making an effort to look after myself and become the strong slim, fit, senior I desire to be.

I will be watching I keep the lifestyle balance right, for the rest of the month, after a workaholic start.

The post is illustrated, by the fridge magnet art, available from my fridgemagnetart.com web site; see side bar, or from our caravan awning studio, while we are on tour.

    _Happy New year :-)
I am going to combine several seemingly contradicting eating and exercise programs and put together my own Artslim Naturally slimming and Gray-Nomad fitness program.  I plan to bring these out as a low cost EBook and small paperback. They will suit anyone interested in managing weight with son=me difficult health conditions such as metabolic syndrome and past injuries.

I'll be showing you some of the books I am reading that have some excellent qualities, although they will not be exactly what I am putting together to suit me and my style of doing things.
I will be focusing on eating and exercising for wellness, weight loss if obese, weight management and balanced fulfilling lifestyle..
