Then don't go on a diet. 98% of people who go on a diet end up more overweight that they were before they ever dieted.  Wold wide research repeatedly comes up with the same information every time. Dieting only adds to an obesity problem.

So what do you do if you want to lose weight?

Change your lifestyle. If you go on a “diet,” you will eventually go off that diet. The result of increased energy input following a harsh decrease of energy intake will cause you to gain weight Diets do not work. People, do not fail diets, diets fail people.

When you change your dietary and physical activity lifestyle in a loving way, that you can maintain and enjoy, you change your habits and you are on track for weight mastery

Check out the following post for the no one secret for long term weight mastery.:-http://www.artslim.org/2/post/2009/12/the-secret-of-weight-management.html

The secret of weight management. 12/13/2009

The MOST IMPORTANT RULE FOR LOSING and MAINTAINING WEIGHT.

Energy in exceeds energy out, you Gain Weight.

Energy in equals energy out, you maintain weight..

Energy out exceeds energy in you lose weight’

That is ‘it’. ~ No expensive book, gym membership  or weight loss program will tell you a better secret of losing weight.

If obesity ‘runs in your family’, if your metabolism is ‘slow’ or if you have an, ‘injury or illness’, which makes it harder for you to be active, those things are unfortunate, but in relation to our bodies weight, these are ‘just excuses’. I can say this because I was once 115 kilo on a short 158 cm frame and I used all of the excuses above and more, to justify, my own obese weight. It would be very easy for me to slide back into more energy in than energy out (I often do this for short periods), and begin to make excuses again, that old “I have tried but I can’t lose weight’, crap.  CRAP. That what it is, to make excuses for being obese or overweight.  Choose to be that way if you wish, you are still a beautiful person, but understand, it is our own choice, what weight we are and we are in control of our weight. Weight mastery is our right, it is simple :- Energy in versus energy out. Our choice, my choice for my body. It isn't about New year’s resolutions we start on New Years day and break on the 5th January.

The Secret of weight management is, 'Getting the energy in versus energy out, balance, right, at this moment and for the rest of today'
Can you do 'today'?

Today is the start of the rest of our life, being an expert at weight management, (forget the diets), just expend a little more energy today than you intake, (get nutrition advice of you need it), and strive to do this as a natural part of taking care of yourself, just like brushing your teeth and going to bed to sleep, it's a self care routine that becomes almost automatic over time. lol, I said 'almost'.
Yes, of course I slip back. I just have and probably always will have weeks when my energy in exceeds my energy out.
Correction is simple, if I am overweight, I go back to expending a little more energy that I take in and if I am maintaining weight I keep my energy intake equal to my energy output. I can do this :-) YOU can do it too. :-).
I am quite comfortable for anyone including myself to be whatever weight they choose to be.  I am all for people loving themselves at whatever size they are and finding peace with food.

I am also for honesty. When addictions are tackled, people need to first look at their addiction and acknowledge they have an addiction before thay can do anything about it.

I have an addiction for the pleasures of creative sedentary activity I need to manage.  I also have an addiction for the pleasure of eating.
Food is one of life's great sensual pleasures and I need to work at managing my consumption of it.
This is an ongoing, life long, need, to stay aware of my need to manage these pleasures and not allow them to manage me.  It is not about, going on a ‘diet’; it is about living our lives where we can love those things that bring us pleasure without our love for them becoming a problem to us.
We can do it. :-). I can do it. :-).

Tomorrow I plan to share, my tips to achieving the right energy balance.

Yanha Gurtji Shared Path Network, Shepparton, Mooroopna, Kialla, northern Victoria. 12/11/2009

There is a shared pathway network for cyclists and walkers that winds its way from the north of Shepparton, at Water's Reserve, south along the Goulburn River to the centre of the City, and branches west to Mooroopna exiting near one of Australia's largest outdoor playgrounds, SPC Ardmona KidsTown.. It also heads south to Kialla Lakes.

I have been using sections of this pathway to exercise in, by walking, stair climbing, doing press-ups on the hand rails and now I am taking Reg and indigo our dog, with me, and we are getting our walking exercise together.

Here is the walking trail, web site The shared pathway, via a spectacular suspension bridge, directly links two of Greater Shepparton's most popular passive recreation areas.

The photos were taken on our walk along the Goulburn River near the Aquamoves gym

Walking back pain and fatigue away. 12/10/2009
0 Comments

I flopped on the sofa after house cleaning duties yesterday, rested my sore back, I decided that as I had not had time to fit in both my gym and the house cleaning as I had intended to that day, I would go for a late afternoon walk. It took a little effort to motivate myself to move off the sofa as I felt so tired.
I said the word ‘walk’, and
Indigo our dog was up at excited attention and so I could not let her downJ, it was ‘on’. J.

There is 170 Hectare of wetlands to provide heaps of fitness walks, eco-therapy and pain distraction therapy. Rivergum forests and the Goulburn and Broken river bank walks, are near our summer home in Mooroopna. This excellent web site shows the location of many of the bushland reserves, in northern Victoria and the southern Riverina http://users.mcmedia.com.au/~stocky/parks.html

Our summer home is on a section of built up above flood level land, adjacent to the flood plain and  Lake Dorothy so picturesque walks are close at hand. The lake is the home of many waterbirds, Ibis, ducks, black swans, Eastern swamp hens and more.

I loved using my new cameraJ. Australian white Ibis will not allow me to get close to their nesting location and so the zoom lenses allowed me to pry and get these photos, from a distance.  Having the interest of the camera and the birds, took my mind off my tiredness, excitement of an interesting activity gave me renewed energy.  I had a most enjoyable walk, I felt a lot fitter, and my back was aching a lot less, when I came back. Evening walks with my new camera will become a regular fitness routing addition through the summer months.

I did my usual morning web search, about subjects that interest me, and I found this:- Why walking eases back pain

Fire, clean air and Contentment. 12/05/2009

Reg and I began touring Australia, from mid autumn until mid spring partly to get away from the smoky pollution from neighbours fireplaces.  I love these Amish fireplaces, they have the look of a wood fire without the pollution.  Not that a well stacked and vented fire made from well seasoned dry wood, needs to be polluting, just not everyone understands how to burn timber without making heaps of irritating smoke.

Wood smoke contains many of the same chemicals as cigarette smoke, including carbon monoxide, nitrogen oxide, hazardous metals, and known carcinogens such as formaldehyde, dioxin, benzene, and toluene. Inhaling wood smoke appears to be just as dangerous - or even more dangerous - as inhaling tobacco smoke. An EPA study concluded that breathing wood smoke particles during high pollution days is equivalent to smoking 4 to 16 cigarettes. Medical studies have linked air pollution with lung cancer, heart attacks, strokes, high blood pressure, congenital heart defects, asthma, and even brain damage. People most at-risk for damage from air pollution include asthma sufferers, diabetics, those with congenital heart failure, and children.

We began our travels from the necessity of seeking cleaner air during winter and now we are simply hooked on the lifestyle and travel half of each year, because we love it.

There is something very satisfying about watching flames dance in a fire.  While we escape the cold south to get away from chimney smoke; we love sitting around the campfire, burning old dry wood which combusts well with little smoke.  There is something very beautiful and peaceful almost meditative, about controlled fire.

Healthy body composition 12/05/2009

Osteoporosis is very common, affecting one in three women and one in twelve men over the age of 50. By my age, more than 50% of women, including myself, have Osteoporosis. Take a look at that picture above and you will know why it is unreasonable to ask a woman with osteoporosis to give waist measurements in a slimming forum as evidence that she is slimming.  Given I have three spinal compression fractures I am rather pleased with the size of my waist, but it is possible for it to expand and for me to still be losing body fat. This happened twice this year.

The weight bearing exercises I now do, helps guard me against further injury. The muscle I build, also shows on the scales as a gain.  I cannot work in a slimming forum where strengthening my body with muscle gain is seen as a negative and this is why I need to work away from most slimming forums., it is not because I do not support and encourage slimming forum members to achieve the healthy goals they set themselves.
One size doesn't fit all, in clothes or support forums.  :-)

With the knowledge that I have osteoporosis and the compression fractures of the spine that follow with it, you will understand why I do not want to slim at any cost. I do not want to be involved in forums where I would get pats on the back for losing weight when I am after a healthy body composition and understand that the scales do not measure this.

I do have a great group of people I can work with for support and my gym instructors but these are in paid fitness programs. That is why I started my ‘loving ourselves, forum

Existing forums are great for those who want to set weight goals, it is time for me to move on to fitness goals and see increased metabolism, excess fat release as a side benefit, not my exclusive focus.

Bathroom scales measure weight, they do not differentiate between lean healthy tissue and excess body fat.

Scales do not consistently show evidence and reward the people who are focusing on building a fit healthy body, protecting themselves from osteoporosis by ensuring they do not lose muscle as they lose weight and gain age.

Many slimmers hit plateaus and weight stalls after having restricted calories and focused on achieving weight loss as a goal for a long time. Some look for answers outside themselves to raise their metabolism when the answer is within their own bodies.  As we lose weight through the loss of muscle, along with fat, we lower our metabolism until weight loss becomes difficult. Some of us, including myself find we have also decreased our bone density largely because of this muscle lose.

The answer for me came from learning to let go of my focus on the scales and concentrate on doing what I need to do to have a healthy body, which in turn allows me to lead the happy active life I love.

I am slimming, and I do weigh myself, but I am focusing on fitness and not the scales. Because of my fitness actions I am building healthy muscle and bone, I am releasing excess body fat and increasing my metabolism, once more.

Healthstream EVO treadmill 12/05/2009

My daughter, Leanne is a busy mum, juggling a career a volunteer job that fits in well with her children’s activities and she is a great mum. Like me, she doesn’t feel that keeping the home looking like home beautiful, is the best use of her time and she is happiest, using her brain and creative skill rather than the endless activity of cleaning up after a family.  Housework can get tedious at times.

Anyhow, like me, she needs to fit in some more fitness related activity into her life, so she has bought a great EVO treadmill, similar to the one in the photo above.  The picture was taken in September 2007, when I owned one, used and loved it. Anyhow, Leanne had bought one like this, and set it up in her spare room, in front of the TV, set and I can use it as much as I would like to. J

So I’ve worked out a give-give, friendly arrangement with Leanne J, I’ll come and wash her dishes, clean her kitchen benches and wipe down her stainless steel backsplash then use her treadmill.  Of course, I would be welcome to use my daughter’s treadmill without cleaning the kitchen first,, J and lol, I do not even like housework, but I did offer to help her out, if she needed me, as long as it was active work.  I told her that with my painting and writing, I have enough sedentary activity in my life and I am happy to help her, in an active way. So it looks like, house cleaning and more treadmill use, will be part of my physical fitness routine from now on.

Planning an active tour. 12/04/2009

Our 2010, tour planning, is progressing well. As I am keen to maintain fitness while on tour, I am looking for locations to travel through and stay at where I can swim and walk and purchase fresh fruit and vegetables.  Holidays can be a great time to maintain and improve on fitness level.  I am making the 2010 tour a dog-friendly caravan park, review tour, so there will be lots of opportunities to walk Indigo, in the surrounding area. I will wear my pedometer and a dog carry sling and I will be striving to do my 10,000 steps a day and pop Indigo into the carry sling, when she becomes tired.

The 2010 tour will be fantastic for all aspects of our well being, it has the emotional satisfaction of the eco therapy, the travel aspects that Reg and I love, together with creative fulfillment for me in my writing and painting work.

Reg, Indigo our poodle and I are going to review dog-friendly caravan parks and I am going to do some on location paint outs, in Victoria during summer early autumn 2010 and plan another tour of the beautiful Grampians region, staying at Grampians Gardens Tourist Park. Then we will tour into NSW reviewing dog friendly caravan parks and we will revisit two of our favourite areas, the Kiama Coast, staying at Seven Mile Beach Holiday Park  and South Ballina, staying at Ballina Beach Holiday Park  So watch out for some lovely coastal on location painting work and stories.

I will update this list as we plan it and add actual dates we will be in each location closer to the completion of our tour plans.  Email me, Kathy, if you have a dog friendly venue you would like me to review during this tour or if you would like to view art or book an art tutorial.

A Years Supply of FREE Tim Tams 12/03/2009

Now I have your attention, lol, J , this is one of the most motivational things I have read in a support forum all year.  An inspirational slimming acquaintance of mine won a year’s supply of Tim Tams. They arrived yesterday, all 52 packets of them. She donated the unopened box full of Tim Tams, to the Salvation Army. She said she did not even peak inside to see what flavours there were.

One of the best things I know to do, when I want to achieve any goal, is to surround myself with positive people. I go to gym as much to be near, slim fit seniors who I can look at and be inspired by, positive trainers, as I do to do the exercises. I could work out at home.  I understand the benefit to me of positive influence from others
.How can I not be motivated to care for myself when surrounded by such strength of character people I mix with.I am so inspired too when people take the time and effort to comment on my posts.

Thank you everyonewho gives me such positive motivation. J.

    _Happy New year :-)
I am going to combine several seemingly contradicting eating and exercise programs and put together my own Artslim Naturally slimming and Gray-Nomad fitness program.  I plan to bring these out as a low cost EBook and small paperback. They will suit anyone interested in managing weight with son=me difficult health conditions such as metabolic syndrome and past injuries.

I'll be showing you some of the books I am reading that have some excellent qualities, although they will not be exactly what I am putting together to suit me and my style of doing things.
I will be focusing on eating and exercising for wellness, weight loss if obese, weight management and balanced fulfilling lifestyle..
