Pomegranate protect against prostate cancer. 01/01/2012

I don't know bout you but when I see a pomegranate fruit I just have to suck the bitter sweet center.  I find it irresistible picked straight from the bush.  I used to grow the dwarf variety for the all year round beauty of the plant in the garden.
The fruit the flower and the leaves in autumn are especially beautiful. Now we are learning of the health benefits as well.

Pomegranates have high levels of antioxidants and, according to US researchers, drinking just 1 glass of the fruit juice a day has been shown to keep prostate cancer at bay, and could even prevent men dying from the disease.

_Does repositioning your behind in the seat as you read and write, constitute exercise? lol - OK - I know I have to make up for this wonderfully contentedly, productive day though sedentary activity day.
Reg is happy playing with fishing lures, reading fishing mags and watching the cricket, I guess we will both need to walk the dog to the lake later - for now, back to contentment :-)

Don't get excited by fast weight loss this summer, it could be a warning sign. 12/24/2011

_ Summer Dehydration Warning:

Anyone can lose weight. Just dehydrate.

Your body is mainly composed of water. Water is as essential to your life as oxygen. In good health you can only live for three days without water. In sickness or infancy this might only be twenty-four hours. Dehydration will show as weight loss. This is not something to become elated about. Get off the scales, eat a balanced diet and drink plenty of fluids, preferably  water.

Remember that soda water and caffeine are both calcium robbers. Combine both of these and drink coke soft drinks and you have a strong bone density destroying mixture in your body as your body draws calcium from your bones to re-alkalize your blood steam.

Technical information:

Textbook of Medical Physiology states that "the total amount of water in a man of average weight (70 kilograms) is approximately 40 litres, averaging 57 percent of his total body weight.

In a newborn infant, this may be as high as 75 percent of the body weight, but it progressively decreases from birth to old age, most of the decrease occurring during the first 10 years of life. Also, obesity decreases the percentage of water in the body, sometimes to as low as 45 percent.

There is not, and cannot be, a figure that is exactly the same for all people. Jackson's (1985) Anatomy & Physiology for Nurses gives a figure of 60% for the proportion of body-weight attributable to water

What is Christmas to You? 12/19/2011

What is Christmas to You?

Our Christmas.

The main thing is :-) Our Family getting together - we love them so much.

Reg and spend nothing on cards and decorations or gourmet food at this time of year, so don't expect a Christmas card - we never send them. We have always emptied our wallets of anything left after the essentials are bought - to go to the needy - not judged on the basis of race or religion or who your parents were - as any God I could believe in would approve.

It is a time we look forward to then celebrate my getting together with our two daughters and the families they have made and celebrate how much we love our family and the little peaceful world we created for ourselves and wish peace to everyone.

We have a little aboriginal foster grandson joins us this year and I especially wish him and his family joy. I may even 'work' Christmas day' - if I feel like it. The book I am writing contains within it a message of religious and racial tolerance, and working on that is 100% in agreement with my feelings about Christmas being about wanting peace for all.

This reminds me of my mum. Mum loved classical music and Christmas carols were the Mormon Tabernacle Choir or the Herald Sun Aria winner guest appearance on Carols by Candlelit - that was when people performed more for the quality of voices than pop star or TV fame personality and I loved that music.

I could not see this Mormon Tabernacle Choir name without thinking of my mum. (((Hugs)) to all who don't have a parent they loved with them this Christmas.

Not sure when it stopped hurting, (mum not being around at Christmas) but it doesn't anymore. Too long ago when I said goodbye to my mum. Gotten close to her though my novel - she wanted to write one and didn't - so I'm doing it for both of us. oh lol, I always did waffle :-). Should have written novels decades ago.

Dietary guidelines outlining what foods Australians should be eating 12/13/2011

_I was in the Shepparton Base Hospital waiting area the other day and saw a very outdated food pyramid on show that showed we should eat mostly carbohydrate food. Thee examples given were of white pasta and grain plus potato.  I thought the potato was fine but 'white refined grains'?   I am a whole grain advocate and still think in the 1970's term of 'pure white and deadly' where it comes to my grain choice.

The dietary guidelines outlining what foods Australians should be eating have been updated for the first time in eight years.New draft advice from the National Health and Medical Research Council gives more detail about what kinds of food help reduce chronic diseases.

The council says the rising incidence of obesity and diabetes shows Australians need to re-assess their diets.

The draft also outlines the dietary needs of pregnant women, breastfeeding mothers and babies from as young as seven months old for the first time.

Review committee chairwoman Doctor Amanda Lee says the new advice is based on a comprehensive review of the latest scientific evidence.

"What we have now is greater differentiation between different types of food; for example for the vegetable group we now know that we need to eat a variety of different types and colours to decrease our risk of various kinds of cancer," she said.
