Muscle is 22% smaller in size than the same weight of fat. 06/30/2009

Watching a large mob of cattle ambling along the roadway, the ‘long paddock’ as it’s called, I observe how the stock man keeps the dog, restrained and moving slowly, well back, the motorbike riding, Jackaroo and Jillaroo, keep well back away from the animals, allowing, encouraging them to take their time.   The cattle are head down, ambling slowly.  I can imagine the drover  is thinking, 'keep  the condition on them, keep the metabolism slowed right down,  don't hurry them, don't burn off any fat marbling in the muscle meat by quickening the pace, we want a good price for this herd.'

Aside from being slowed down by a mob of fat cattle on the long paddock, I did a lot of research this week to find out exactly how much smaller a kilo of pure muscle was, compared with a kilo of animal fat  and how that mob of cattle, being encouraged to move slowly and not burn off any condition (fat and marbled with fat, muscle), applied to me and my striving to be naturally slim.

Muscle takes up 22% less space than the same weight of fat in the body.

That is encouraging to me and anyone else on a weight release stall, where the scales do not seem to respond any more to the effort we put in.

If I continue to exercise as I am,  I am not only becoming fitter, increasing my bone density and  going to live longer and healthier, enough motivation in itself, but I really will become slimmer, more shapely and toned

Muscle burns twice the amount of energy as fat. To increase your fat burning metabolism, you need to increase your muscles, by exercising them.
Taking pills, fat blasters and metabolism boosters will only make your savings smaller over the long term, not your body.   Start off gently, like I did, having a medical check up before you begin exercising is wise and ask your doctor to give you your test results for cholesterol, blood pressure, blood sugars, etc that you can use as markers to see how you are improving.

We know how to make slow metabolism, fat building bodies....slow down, don’t exercise.

We know how to rev up the metabolism,..exercise.

It is supposed to be harder to lose weight as you get older, but that is only because most people as they get old, are losing muscle every year.

Muscle is a dynamic energy burning part of the body.

Even when we are at rest muscle is burning energy, fat is inactive and burns no fuel. That's why when we begin to lose muscle, most people begin to gain weight.  The only reason people lose muscle as they get older is because they slow down and stop exercising.   I see people sitting around in the hot springs for an hour or so, talking, some think I am strange because I exercise.  Just when I am thinking I am alone in being in my 60's and making an effort to be fit, along comes some sprightly seniors and they join me and exercise with me.  I can see these exercising seniors are leaner, more muscular and can walk back up the hill more easily than those who seem to feel retirement means take it easy. I see these, make no more effort than we have to, group of seniors then struggle to make it back up the hill from the pool. Next year or the year after, they have to just give up even trying to go to the pool.  I can say this, with no feeling I am being too critical, because I was once inactive like they are.  I was once the one having difficulty getting up the hill.   Life is EASIER now, and more enjoyable because I exercise. This would be true at any age, but especially at my age.

No one achieves very much until they start thinking in the positive.  I need to think in the positive.

Life gets easier, when I exercise.

My metabolism increases when I exercise..

I do not want tools that make me think about things being harder, tools like, unresponsive scales and weekly weigh in days, that’s in my past now.  I am thinking, in the positive.

It is becoming EASIER to achieve all my goals.

It is easy to be naturally slimJ

I am beginning to think that each time I go back to my doctor to reassess  test results is soon enough to hop on the scales again, when I seek to find out if there have been  improvements gained in cholesterol levels and a halting of the journey to lifestyle disease as a result of my  increased fitness by exercising  and intuitively eating for heath.

How my clothes fit, is the best indicator of my slimness and how I feel is the best assessment for my fitness.   I am happy with this weeks effort even if I doubt I have lost any weight, other than weight off my mind, from releasing even more of my past dependence on a set of bathroom scales as a judge of my progress.

I am becoming slimmer.

Kathy this is an interesting post and something I was just talking to Mathew about. I was remarking that in 1989 I was heavy and started a diet when my size 20 clothes were getting too tight, yet 15 years later I found myself nearly 10 kilos heavier than 1989 but I was 2 sizes smaller - the difference was that in 1989 I didn't exercise and in 2004 I did.

    _Happy New year :-)
I am going to combine several seemingly contradicting eating and exercise programs and put together my own Artslim Naturally slimming and Gray-Nomad fitness program.  I plan to bring these out as a low cost EBook and small paperback. They will suit anyone interested in managing weight with son=me difficult health conditions such as metabolic syndrome and past injuries.

I'll be showing you some of the books I am reading that have some excellent qualities, although they will not be exactly what I am putting together to suit me and my style of doing things.
I will be focusing on eating and exercising for wellness, weight loss if obese, weight management and balanced fulfilling lifestyle..
